Just one more dungeon run, just one more night of farming, just make a few more items - and then it's 3 a.m., and you're wondering where the time has gone. No specific mechanic is too complex, but since almost everything you can do in the game has an experience bar and feeds into each other, it becomes very easy to get addicted. The addition of a light town sim ends up working extremely well. They're another resource, but it feels way cooler to earn these features by aiding the town instead of spending money or beating up monsters. Royal decree bonuses range from a larger backpack to throwing your own festivals. In turn, you can use those things to farm better, collect monsters to harvest for eggs or milk, and so on.Įxclusive to RF4 are royal decrees, which are powerful bonuses that you can unlock by spending points that you earn by helping the town.

You need to spend farmed items to use those abilities.

You can use those profits to upgrade your other abilities, such as alchemy, cooking, and or forging weapons. You start off in true Song of Seasons/Harvest Moon style by farming and turning your farmed goods into profits.
Rune factory 4 review series#
The game is a series of interlocking games that all feed into each other. Sure, there's more complexity and nuance to the plot, but ultimately, it's about being the best combat farmer you can be. Being ruler doesn't mean sitting back and relaxing, but it's a combination of combat, royal management and, of course, farming. They awaken in the town of Ventuswill and, through a series of unlikely coincidences, take over as the ruler of the town. On their way to the city of Selphira, they are knocked unconscious by bandits and tossed off their airship. Rune Factory 4 puts players in control of one of two protagonists: a boy named Lest and a girl named Frey. It might not be an impressive port, but it's still a great game. Rune Factory 4 Special is what you get when that is ported to the Switch. Rune Factory 4 for the Nintendo 3DS was one of the best of the franchise and genuinely one of the best games on the 3DS. It took the farming and casual life sim antics and added in a healthy dose of RPG elements to provide a similar-yet-different experience. Sure, it plays things safe, but there's a surprising amount of fun to be had crafting items, taming monsters, and building relationships in between sometimes-bland dungeon runs.Rune Factory was a fantasy-themed spin-off of the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons franchise. But if you're willing to slog through until it opens up, you'll find an enjoyable offering packed with some fun simulations and an elaborate crafting system. With deeper combat and a shorter tutorial, Rune Factory 4 could've been an exceptional game. The can perform tasks that you may not have much fun doing yourself, freeing you up to do the things you actually want to. In Rune Factory 4, monsters can be used as farm hands and can create items, which adds a new level of usefulness outside of combat. Although dungeons can be a bore, resources abound within them-and, of course, monsters to tame. Regardless of your input, your town will improve over time, and more events and buildings will unlock, prodding you to keep taking care of your townsfolk. "Should you decide to power through the initial tedium, the game really opens up and never lets go." Further, resources called Prince/Princess Points allow you to customize the game to your liking, whether that be creating new events in town, expanding your cooking abilities, or upgrading your character's offensive or gathering abilities. If cooking and fishing are your thing, you'll constantly find new recipes and fishing holes to keep things feeling fresh. If you decide on scavenging for equipment, you'll often find that your dungeon runs will produce more useful spoils than most other games. Once everything is available, there's almost no end to what you can accomplish, or what you can choose to do. Should you decide to power through the initial tedium, the game really opens up and never lets go.

On the flipside though, that means this is the perfect entry for newcomers. If you’re someone who plays a lot of RPGs and know the basics inside and out, you're still going to have to go through a tutorial for some 10 hours, performing menial tasks until the game trusts you to take over. For what feels like hours on end, the game has to teach you about every little thing before you're allowed to actually experience it.

Rune Factory 4's biggest problem, though, is its hand-holding. ".dungeon-crawling sometimes devolves into nothing more than a chore."
